Strengthening Industrial Resilience in Phaltan
Cummins PHP

Overview

The Cummins PHP project represents a significant advancement in Behind-the-Meter (BTM) energy storage for high-precision manufacturing in India. Located at the Cummins facility in Phaltan, Maharashtra, this utility-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) is designed to provide mission-critical power security. By integrating a large-scale LFP battery solution, Cummins has fortified its operational continuity against grid instabilities while optimizing its energy consumption patterns through advanced peak shaving.

Project Profile

Client: Cummins PHP

Location: Phaltan, Satara, Maharashtra

AmpereHour Scope: Turnkey BESS (End-to-end design, integration, and commissioning)

Commissioning Date: February 2025

Power Capacity: 1.5 MW (1500 kW)

Energy Capacity: 4 MWh (Installed) / 3.5 MWh (Operational)

Technical Excellence & System Integration

Delivering a multi-megawatt storage solution within an active industrial high-horsepower (PHP) manufacturing site required rigorous engineering standards.

  • AHE Integrated Solution: AmpereHour Energy (AHE) delivered a robust 1.5 MW / 3.5 MWh LFP battery-based system tailored for heavy industrial loads.
  • Advanced LFP Chemistry: The system utilizes Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) technology, chosen for its superior safety profile and thermal stability—critical for the industrial climate of Satara.
  • Turnkey Execution: The project encompassed the full lifecycle from system engineering and procurement to final site activation, ensuring a seamless “plug-and-play” integration with Cummins’ existing electrical infrastructure.

Key Applications

The Cummins BESS serves as a dual-purpose energy asset, providing both emergency resilience and economic optimization:

  1. Mission-Critical Backup Power: As a Behind-the-Meter (BTM) asset, the system provides near-instantaneous backup power, protecting sophisticated manufacturing equipment from grid outages and voltage fluctuations.
  2. Industrial Peak Shaving: The system is programmed to discharge during periods of peak demand, reducing the facility’s maximum demand charges from the utility and lowering overall operational expenditure.
  3. Grid Resilience: By smoothing out load profiles, the BESS reduces the stress on the local distribution network, contributing to a more stable electrical environment for the entire industrial cluster.

Strategic Significance

The Phaltan installation demonstrates how global manufacturing leaders like Cummins are leveraging energy storage to de-risk their operations. By moving away from a total reliance on the grid and fossil-fuel backup, this project provides a scalable blueprint for the “Factory of the Future”—one that is resilient, cost-effective, and aligned with modern sustainability goals.
