Transforming Community Energy Access in Ondo State
PowerGen Nigeria

Overview

The Ondo State Microgrid project represents a transformative step toward sustainable rural electrification in Nigeria. Developed by PowerGen Nigeria Assets in partnership with PowerGen Nigeria, this initiative integrates high-capacity battery storage with solar photovoltaics (PV) to provide reliable, 24/7 renewable energy to local communities. By replacing or supplementing traditional energy sources with a clean energy microgrid, the project directly enhances the quality of life and economic potential for residents in the region.

Project Profile

Client: PowerGen Nigeria Assets

Partner: PowerGen Nigeria

AmpereHour Scope: Turnkey BESS (End-to-end design, supply, and integration)

Commissioning Date: May 2024

Location: Ondo State, Nigeria

Total Power Capacity: 1.25 MW

Total Energy Capacity: 2.9 MWh (delivered as 3 separate systems)

Technical Excellence & Microgrid Integration

The project required a robust, modular energy storage solution capable of operating in a remote, distributed environment.

  • AHE Integrated Solution: AmpereHour Energy (AHE) delivered a complete turnkey package consisting of three separate 1 MWh-class LFP battery-based energy storage systems.
  • Modular Hardware: Each system is housed in a 20-foot container, designed for durability and ease of transport to remote community sites.
  • PV Co-location: The BESS is co-located with solar PV arrays, creating a self-sustaining Microgrid that captures solar energy during the day for use throughout the night.
  • LFP Chemistry: The use of Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) technology ensures a high safety rating and long cycle life, which are critical for maintaining infrastructure in off-grid community settings.

Key Applications & Social Impact

The primary objective of the Ondo State systems is to provide comprehensive energy services for the village/community:

  1. Community Powering: The 2.9 MWh of stored energy provides a stable power supply for residential lighting, small businesses, and community services, independent of the national grid.
  2. Solar Maximization: By storing excess solar generation during peak sunlight hours, the BESS ensures that the renewable energy produced is utilized to its full potential rather than being wasted.
  3. Grid Independence: The microgrid setup provides a reliable alternative to diesel generators, significantly reducing fuel costs and environmental pollution within the community.

Strategic Significance

This project serves as a scalable model for rural electrification across Sub-Saharan Africa. By proving the efficacy of containerized, turnkey BESS in the Nigerian context, PowerGen and AHE are demonstrating how modular renewable technology can bypass traditional infrastructure hurdles to deliver immediate energy access to underserved populations.
