Transforming Industrial Reliability with Intelligent BESS
Coca-Cola, Chennai

Overview

The Coca-Cola South India facility project represents a major milestone in sustainable industrial energy management. Developed for Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages (HCCB), this high-performance Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) moves beyond traditional backup power to act as a multi-functional grid-stabilizing asset. By replacing conventional diesel-based systems with an intelligent, Li-ion-based architecture, the plant has enhanced its operational resilience while making measurable progress toward its global Net-Zero ambitions.

Project Profile

Client: Coca-Cola

Partner: Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages (HCCB)

AmpereHour Scope: Turnkey BESS (End-to-end design, implementation, and commissioning)

Commissioning Date: March 2024

Location: Chennai, Tamil Nadu

Power Capacity: 0.5 MW

Energy Capacity: 0.645 MWh

Technical Excellence & "Elina" Intelligence

Executing a turnkey storage project for a high-speed beverage manufacturing plant required precise engineering and sophisticated software control.

  • Critical Load Integration: The BESS is strategically installed on the plant’s most critical loads, ensuring that sensitive bottling and processing equipment remain operational during grid fluctuations.
  • Li-ion Technology: The system utilizes high-density Lithium-ion batteries, providing the rapid response time and thermal stability required for the industrial climate of Chennai.
  • Powered by Elina™: The entire system is operated through AmpereHour’s intelligent Elina Energy Management System (EMS), which automates complex energy decisions in real-time to optimize plant performance.

Multi-Stream Value Creation

Unlike standard backup systems, this BESS unlocks several high-value applications simultaneously:

  1. DG Replacement & Minimization: By providing instantaneous power during outages, the system significantly reduces the need to start or run Diesel Generators (DGs), lowering fuel costs and emissions.
  2. Voltage Regulation: The BESS actively monitors and stabilizes voltage levels, protecting machinery from the wear and tear associated with unstable grid power.
  3. Power Factor Improvement: Through intelligent reactive power management, the system improves the plant’s power factor, enhancing overall electrical efficiency and preventing utility penalties.
  4. Path to Net-Zero: The reduction in DG utilization directly contributes to the facility’s sustainability targets by lowering its Scope 1 carbon footprint.

Strategic Significance

The Coca-Cola Chennai installation serves as a “first-of-its-kind” proof of concept for the FMCG sector in South India. It proves that energy storage is not just a secondary backup tool, but a primary driver of industrial efficiency and decarbonization. By integrating the Elina EMS, HCCB has secured a future-ready energy architecture that can adapt to changing grid conditions and evolving corporate sustainability mandates.
