In a monumental milestone for clean energy, AmpereHour Energy and IndiGrid have officially commissioned a massive 180 MW / 360 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at the GETCO substation in Charal, Sanand Industrial Area, Gujarat. Officially named Gujarat BESS Private Limited (GBPL), this project isn’t just India’s largest standalone utility-scale battery installation-it stands proud as one of the largest BESS capacities in all of Asia.

With Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Limited (GUVNL) as the off-taker, GBPL serves as a replicable blueprint for the 10 GWh of transmission-connected BESS capacity expected to roll out across India.

The Scale of the Innovation

Building one of Asia’s largest standalone BESS facilities was nothing short of a mammoth task. To pull it off, the team at AmpereHour Energy had to scale up learnings from their previous 40 MWh project in Delhi into a massive 360 MWh reality.

Strategically collocated at a Gujarat Energy Transmission Corporation (GETCO) substation, the project is classified as an integral part of the transmission system.

How It Works: True Operational Flexibility

The BESS facility acts like an intelligent green shock absorber for the electrical grid.

  • Energy Shifting: It stores surplus solar and wind power during off-peak hours and discharges it during morning and evening peaks, ensuring grid stability.
  • On-Demand Usage: The system is engineered for maximum flexibility, allowing GUVNL to cycle the battery twice daily to manage intense peak load spikes.
  • Engineered for Longevity: Despite this high utilization, AmpereHour’s system is engineered to maintain an optimal battery lifespan over its 12-year contract period.

Engineering with a "First Time Right" Principle

Meeting GUVNL’s stringent grid requirements demanded precision engineering. AmpereHour’s R&D and engineering teams conducted advanced simulation studies to optimize the entire electrical chain—from the massive 220 kV grid connection all the way down to the DC systems. This meticulous planning ensured maximum usable energy and high Round Trip Efficiency (RTE).

The flawless, “one-go” commissioning was powered by deep tech:

  • ELINA EMS: AmpereHour’s proprietary Energy Management System integrated massive, complex data streams in real time.
  • AH Suite: A software platform that maintained high-quality execution and collaboration across multiple contractors.
  • Flexible Integration Architecture: An intelligent, hardware-agnostic technology layer that allowed IndiGrid to deploy a technically superior and commercially optimized system.

Social, Strategic, and Environmental Impact

Gujarat has firmly established itself as a frontrunner in the green energy transition, launching a collective 870 MW of battery storage projects statewide. Within this ambitious ecosystem, GBPL delivers impact on multiple fronts:

  • Renewable Integration: Directly supports Gujarat’s goal of 100 GW of renewable capacity by 2030 by bridging the gap of intermittent green energy sources.
  • Energy Security: Reduces dependency on fossil-fuel-based peaking plants, actively lowering the carbon footprint for the state’s industrial hubs.
  • Market Leadership: Positions the IndiGrid and AmpereHour Energy partnership as a first-mover in the large-scale standalone storage market.

Regulatory and Financial Innovation

GBPL isn’t just a win for engineering; it’s a triumph of commercial design. The project was awarded to IndiGrid in March 2024 through a transparent Tariff-Based Competitive Bidding (TBCB) process conducted by GUVNL.

Developed on a Build, Own, and Operate (BOO) basis, the project features a 12-year Battery Energy Storage Service Agreement (BESSA).

Financial Breakdown:

  • Tariff Structure: A fixed capacity charge of ₹449,996 per MW per month, translating to an annual tariff of over ₹97 crore.
  • Global Backing: Supported by $55 million in long-term financing from the International Finance Corporation (IFC), which includes concessional funding from the Clean Technology Fund (CTF).

As the project developer, IndiGrid has set an entirely new benchmark for utility-scale storage infrastructure in India. This project does more than just balance today’s grid—it paves the way for the nation’s grander green goals.
